We're just happy they are poems about basketball or basketball-related To the question: How do young people respond to poetry, California poet laureate Quincy Troupe responded: I have this poem about basketball great Magic Johnson (entitled 'Poem for Magic') and when I go to high schools, I read this poem. Kids usually think that poetry is going to be about something else, but when I get to that poem, their eyes always light up, whatever their ethnicity, they just light up because they never thought that a poem could be about a basketball player.
